1096 Preparing Final Year Students for the Basic Management of Acute Surgical Patients Through High Fidelity Simulation Article Swipe

Aim This study aimed to design, implement, and evaluate a surgical simulation series to prepare 5th-year medical students for their final year, focusing on prioritising the management of unwell surgical patients on the ward. The sessions sought to address identified learning needs and enhance confidence in managing acute clinical scenarios relevant to foundation-level surgical practice. Method A needs analysis was conducted using pre-session surveys to identify students' perceived gaps in knowledge and skills related to managing unwell surgical patients. The series consisted of high-fidelity simulation sessions, designed to replicate ward-based scenarios such as recognising and escalating deteriorating patients, managing postoperative complications, and handling acute surgical emergencies. Scenarios incorporated multidisciplinary team dynamics to simulate real-world clinical environments. Post-session surveys and qualitative feedback evaluated changes in confidence, knowledge, and preparedness for clinical practice. Results Participants reported increased confidence in recognising and managing deteriorating surgical patients. Qualitative feedback highlighted the value of practicing decision-making and prioritisation in a realistic, supportive setting. The simulations were particularly effective in improving understanding of escalation protocols and teamwork in acute situations. Students appreciated the structured approach to managing high-pressure scenarios and felt better prepared for the transition to foundation training. Conclusions The surgical simulation series successfully addressed identified gaps in knowledge and skills, improving participants' confidence and competence in managing unwell surgical patients. High-fidelity simulation was a valuable tool for bridging the gap between theoretical learning and clinical practice, offering a scalable model for preparing students for the challenges of foundation-level training.
