The receiving period in beef cattle production poses nutritional and health challenges, particularly for stressed high-risk newly arrived calves. Typically, feed intake in these calves is less than 1% of their body weight for several days post-arrival. This reduced feed intake may stem from disrupted endocrine signaling, altered blood metabolite concentrations due to feed and water deprivation, and a weakened immune system. While various strategies to enhance feed and water intake and immunocompetence have been studied, the use of multiple additives delivered simultaneously and in different forms has not been fully explored. This study evaluated dry matter intake (DMI), water intake (WI), performance, and health parameters of high-risk calves receiving an oral drench and feed formulation consisting of natural extracts, polyclonal egg antibodies, essential oils, yeast beta-glucans and yeast metabolites during a typical 60-day receiving protocol involving the sequential use of three antibiotics as needed. One hundred sixty heifers from multiple sale barns arrived in three separate deliveries and were allocated to four pens with two dietary treatments: CONTROL or FURST RECEIVER (FR). Within each treatment, heifers received a single 30 mL drench of either reverse osmosis water (H2O) or the drench formulation (DRENCH) upon arrival. Data were analyzed as a randomized complete block design in a split-plot arrangement, with no interactions observed between whole-plot and subplot treatments unless specified (P > 0.10). Mortality in the first 30 days was lower with DRENCH compared to H2O (11.3 vs. 21.3%, respectively; P = 0.03), where the odds of mortality for the H2O group were 3.11 times greater than for the DRENCH group according to the model. For the first antibiotic treatment, there was an interaction between dietary and drench treatments (P = 0.01). Within the FR pen, calves receiving DRENCH had significantly greater odds of requiring a first antibiotic treatment compared to those receiving H2O during the first 30 days (35 vs. 10%; OR = 0.181, 95% CI: 0.051–0.640; P < 0.01). No treatment effects were observed for second or third antibiotic treatments (P > 0.10), though delivery significantly influenced the probability of a second antibiotic treatment (P < 0.01), with delivery 1 and 2 showing lower probabilities than delivery 3. Performance such as ADG and G:F were unaffected by treatments (P > 0.10). A trend was observed for DRENCH to reduce DMI (P = 0.06). An interaction between drench treatment and delivery was observed for WI (P = 0.01); calves from delivery 3 receiving DRENCH drank 35% less water than other groups, while delivery 1 calves receiving DRENCH consumed similar amounts to calves receiving H2O. These findings suggest that the multi-additive drench formulation may support health in high-risk calves, as evidenced by reduced mortality within the first 30 days.
