A 1.6 Tesla whole body magnet for 31 P NMR spectroscopy is being installed a t the principle teaching hospital in Oxford.This facility i s for the purpose o f evaluating the potential o f phosphorus NMR as a tool in clinical research and as an aid to the clinical management o f patients.Suitable space could not readily be provided within the existing hospital block and therefore a separate building has beenconstructed to accommodate the spectrometer,adjacent to the main hospital.The Unit has been designed with the aim o f it being safe without it being too restrictive and o f being able to accommodate t h e , p a r t i c u l a r requirements o f a large, high-field, superconducting magnet.' The following were the major design considerations: 1)Size and weight o f the magnet 2)The effects o f structural steel 3)The effects o f the field on electronic and/or magnetic instrumentation both inside and outside the building.
