Diffusion pumps are kinetic high vacuum pumps that operate by transferring momentum from a high-speed (typically supersonic) operating fluid vapor jet towards the pumped gas. Their typical operating regime lies in the transitional gas regime (Knudsen number around unity) and can therefore not be described accurately with neither free-molecular nor continuum theory. Hence, the Boltzmann equation has to be solved. In the present work we compare two numerical methods for solving the Boltzmann equation, namely the stochastic direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) and the deterministic discrete velocity method (DVM), for an artificial, one-dimensional test problem resembling the main physical processes in a diffusion pump. The advantages and disadvantages of the two methods are outlined with regard to accuracy and computational resource requirements. Additionally, we compare the numerical results to results obtained from a simplified analytical model.
