Association of Circulatory T-cadherin with Diagnostic Parameters of Metabolic Syndrome Article Swipe

A BSTRACT Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is increasing the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and is mediated through hyperglycemia, hypertension, abdominal obesity, and hypertriglyceridemia. Early screening of MetS is required to reduce the incident of CVD. T-cadherin is associated with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and CVD. Circulatory T-cadherin may be used for screening of MetS. Purpose: It was aimed to find the association of circulatory T-cadherin with diagnostic parameters of MetS. Methods: In this case-control study, a total of 200 subjects (100 MetS patients and 100 age-matched healthy controls) were included, aged between 30 and 70 years. For diagnosis of MetS, fasting blood sugar (FBS), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), triglyceride (TG), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and waist circumference (WC) were measured. Circulatory T-cadherin was measured by enzyme-linked immunoassay and receiver operative curve (ROC) analysis was performed to find its suitable cut-off value for screening of MetS. A P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Mean of TG, WC, SBP, DBP, HbA1c, FBS, and T-cadherin were found significantly elevated in patients with MetS as compared to controls ( P < 0.001). However, mean of HDL-C was found significantly reduced in patients with MetS as compared to controls ( P < 0.001). T-cadherin has shown a significant negative correlation with HDL-C ( r = −0.222, P < 0.05) and DBP ( r = −0.355, P < 0.01). ROC analysis indicated that cut-off value of circulatory T-cadherin (4.5 ng/ml) is suitable for screening of MetS (area under the curve = 0.890, 95% confidence interval [0.844–0.936], P < 0.001). Conclusion: Results showed that circulatory T-cadherin associated with diagnostic parameters of MetS. Circulatory T-cadherin levels (4.5 ng/ml) can be used for screening of MetS. Further study is required in large sample and different ethnic groups to confirm present findings.
