This book is not about wrongful convictions per se but about the political dimensions of the advocacy movement that revolves around them.In part, we analyze various ways of communicating information about wrongful convictions and how they might influence state policy adoption and public opinion.Such information is common in public discourse-in the news media and in all forms of popular culture, from books to film to podcasts (and everything in between). We suspect that many readers have heard this discourse, whether it came in the form of factual information about how many innocent people are unjustly imprisoned or a single tragic story about an innocent person erroneously convicted for a crime they did not commit. We believe it is important to engage in authentic discussions about these matters and empirically analyze what effects they might have on our policies, practices, and beliefs. As such, throughout the book, we describe both real and hypothetical criminal cases that involve material that might be upsetting and/or traumatic for some readers, including homicide, sexual violence, and violence against children. We also want to emphasize at the outset that we recognize the immense and widespread damage caused by wrongful convictions. In our discussions throughout this book, we tend to emphasize the harms for exonerees themselves. However, a wrongful conviction creates an immeasurable number of ripples.Exonerees are at the forefront, of course, as the most obvious victims, but they are not alone.Their families, communities, and social networks are harmed; the original crime victim(s) and members of their network(s) are harmed; lawyers, judges, and juries might be harmed; actual offenders may remain loose to commit additional crimes and claim new victims.Despite our specific focus, we encourage readers to consider broadly the effects of wrongful convictions and consult the many wonderful resources-scholarly and otherwise-that help us understand the various dimensions of errors in the criminal legal system.
