Oral cancer cells sense and respond to matrix stiffness via myosin contractility. As part of their response, they use AKT and FAK signaling to retain and recall the ‘memory’ developed within the tumor core to remain highly migratory and mesenchymal in tumor adjacent epithelium, despite being significantly softer.
