Les deux chapitres précédents ont montré que la définition des AMP devait reposer sur une bonne connaissance de la biologie et de l'écologie des espèces, mais également sur l'identification d'habitats sensibles dont le maintien dans un bon état écologique devait assurer la productivité des écosystèmes et la diversité spécifique qui leur sont associées. Pour autant, ces connaissances sont-elles suffisantes pour sélectionner et gérer les habitats les plus sensibles et les plus utiles ?De nouveau, la notion de résilience doit être évoquée et par là même les processus de sélection qui permettent de la prendre en compte. De quelle résilience parle-t-on ? De la résilience vue par les sciences écologiques ou de celle des sciences humaines et sociales ?David et al. tentent à partir de l'exemple des AMP coralliennes de passer en revue les modèles théoriques associés aux AMP et à la résilience des récifs. Comme les perturbations auxquelles sont soumis les écosystèmes sont à la fois d'origine naturelle (changement climatique) et anthropique (exploitation, aménagement, pollution), ils introduisent la notion de résilience sociale qui en dehors de la résilience écologique, nécessite de prendre en compte l'acceptation des acteurs locaux. Mais la résilience des coraux doit‑elle être envisagée à l'échelle de l'écosystème et/ou à celle du socio-système ? L'échelle à prendre en compte ne doit-elle pas être plus large pour rejoindre la notion de territoire ?
