Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) was first described in 1935 as an association of amenorrhea, hirsutism, obesity, insulin resistance, bilateral ovarian hypertrophy, and the formation of multiple small cysts. This review aims to identify and analyze relevant scientific studies, emphasizing the challenges in applying the clinical criteria essential for PCOS diagnosis. A bibliographic review covering the last ten years was conducted using databases such as SCIELO, PUBMED, LILACS, BVS, and MEDLINE. Hyperandrogenism in PCOS manifests with symptoms such as acne, alopecia, seborrhea, menstrual irregularities, precocious puberty, psychological disorders, metabolic syndrome, virilization, and hirsutism. Diagnosis relies on clinical and exclusion criteria. Pathophysiology involves endocrine axis dysfunction, with increased LH and androgen levels due to insufficient FSH. Treatment approaches include hormonal therapy, insulin sensitizers, surgical interventions, and lifestyle changes. These manifestations significantly impact patients' quality of life, requiring an integrated therapeutic approach.
