岩石や堆積物を構成する鉱物の定量評価手法の一つとしてX線粉末回折データを用いた方法がある.米国地質調査所のEberl(2003)によって開発されたRockJockプログラムは無料で配布されていて,Excelマクロをベースとしたソルバーのため,比較的簡便に利用できる.定量可能な鉱物は90種以上もあるため,ほとんどの海底下掘削試料の分析に対応できる.一方,プログラムの解析精度と問題点についてはこれまであまり議論されてこなかった.さらに,微少量しか採取できない試料や,断層帯などに含まれる非晶質物質に対してRockJockによる解析方法が確立されていない.そこで本研究では,海底下掘削コア試料と標準試料を用いて,RockJockの解析方法の問題点を評価した.本評価により,微量試料や非晶質物質の分析にも対応が可能であり,構成鉱物に応じて解析条件を適切に選択する重要性が明らかとなった.また,船上分析等で定性評価に用いられたXRDデータも定量評価に再利用できることがわかった.
