The German Historical Perspectives series was established in 1987 as an Englishlanguage forum for the presentation of research by German historians and social scientists to readers in English-speaking countries.Each of the volumes is devoted to a particular theme that is discussed from different points of view in separate essays by specialists.The series addresses questions that are prominent in contemporary academic debate and of broad topical interest to Germans and non-Germans alike.It is not limited to issues within Germany alone but also includes publications and individual essays covering the history of other countries, as well as general problems of political, economic, social and intellectual history and international relations, and issues in comparative history.The editors hope that the series will help to overcome the language barrier that can obstruct the rapid appreciation of German research in English-speaking countries.
