L’indice CBR est un paramètre fondamental utilisé dans la construction des ouvrages en terre ou des assises de chaussées. Les mesures réalisées sur les sols argileux gonflants montrent qu’il demeure très faible. Les essais des mesures de CBR réalisés sur les mélanges de l’argile gonflante et du sable, dans la région de l’Extrême-Nord du Cameroun, indiquent qu’avec une proportion de 40% de sable et une énergie de compactage de 25 coups, le CBR de l’argile gonflante de Maroua passe de 1,27 à 5,58 et celle de Fotokol de 2,18 à 5,26. Pour une proportion de 30% de sable (resp. 40%) et une énergie de compactage de 55 coups, l’argile gonflante de Maroua passe de 4,3 à 5,31 (resp. 4,3 à 7,9) et celle de Fotokol de 3,54 à 5,69 (resp. 3,4 à 7,59) pour des valeurs des teneurs en eau comprises entre 12,11% et 19,79%.
