Environmental Education and the Importance of Organizing the Recyclable Collectors Cooperative Article Swipe

Objective: The aim of this study is to implement selective waste collection in the municipality of Santa Luzia (MA) through intervention actions using environmental education methodologies, in collaboration with recyclable material collectors. Theoretical Framework: Technological advancements have brought important contributions that have enabled the development of society. As a result, we are experiencing a crisis of values that has generated social and environmental problems of various proportions. The process of social exclusion that affects the less favored population is a result of these crises. Environmental education, used as a tool associated with waste collection, is an alternative for fostering critical environmental development in communities. Method: With the aim of organizing and regularizing the cooperative of waste pickers, documents were analyzed and regularized, followed by the quantification of the sale of waste for the first six months of 2022. Regarding environmental perception, two semi-structured interviews were conducted with the waste pickers and the merchants. Based on the data, intervention actions such as leaflet distribution and awareness-raising lectures with the merchants were developed to help them understand the importance of selective waste collection in waste management. Results and Discussion: The results obtained revealed that environmental education actions contribute to social inclusion and to the understanding of the value of the profession of waste collection and sorting by the waste pickers, as well as the importance of these professionals for urban cleaning management in the municipality of Santa Luzia. Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this research are discussed, providing insights into how the results can be applied or influence practices in the field of informal environmental education. These implications may encompass public organizations, schools, universities, and NGOs. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by demonstrating how environmental education methodologies can be effective in the formalization and organization of cooperatives. Furthermore, it allows for an understanding of the importance of these actions in a municipality like Santa Luzia.
