Equilibrium statistical mechanics in one dimension (Chapter 6) Article Swipe
This chapter introduces equilibrium statistical mechanics in one dimension based on the Boltzmann factor distribution. The concepts of free energy and entropy are quantified based on simple calculations of state populations. The harmonic approximation and the equipartition concept are introduced. As a numerical method ideally suited to equilibrium calculations, Monte Carlo simulation is introduced. Connections to kinetics are explored in terms of the Arrhenius factor. Finally, the chapter addresses the question of whether free energy should be minimized in general.
