Evaluation of Dimensional Accuracy of Three Commercially Available Irreversible Hydrocolloids Using Two Different Mixing and Disinfection Techniques and Assessing Gypsum Interactions – An In vitro Study Article Swipe

A BSTRACT Introduction: This in vitro study evaluates the effect of two disinfection techniques – immersion (IM) and self-disinfection (SD) – on the dimensional stability of three different alginate impression materials mixed using hand (HM) and automatic (AM) methods. Materials and Methods: A total of 240 impressions were prepared using three alginate types: Neocolloid (Group A), DPI Chromatex (Group B), and 3M-ESPE (Group C). Each group was divided into subgroups based on mixing techniques (HM and AM). Impressions were disinfected using either 2% chlorhexidine gluconate immersion or self-disinfection. Dimensional stability and surface detail reproduction were assessed using a scanning electron microscope, and statistical analysis was performed using an independent t -test. Results: For Group A, hand mixing resulted in a mean dimensional stability of 1.96% ± 0.20% (SD) versus 1.72% ± 0.21% (IM) ( P = 0.001), while automatic mixing showed a mean stability of 1.88% ± 0.22% (SD) compared to 1.57% ± 0.20% (IM) ( P < 0.001). Group B displayed a mean dimensional stability of 2.30% ± 0.28% (SD) versus 2.06% ± 0.28% (IM) for hand mixing ( P = 0.01), but no significant difference was noted for automatic mixing, with mean stabilities of 2.33% ± 0.27% (SD) and 2.51% ± 1.36% (IM) ( P = 0.58). In Group C, hand mixing yielded a mean dimensional stability of 1.39% ± 0.31% (SD) versus 1.16% ± 0.31% (IM) ( P = 0.02), and automatic mixing showed 1.53% ± 0.23% (SD) compared to 1.28% ± 0.22% (IM) ( P = 0.001). Conclusion: The immersion disinfection technique and automatic mixing method significantly showed better dimensional stability of alginate impressions. Further antimicrobial studies are required to arrive at a conclusion.
