ゾウミジンコが藍藻を餌として利用していることから,ゾウミジンコを活用した藍藻抑制技術の開発が期待されている.本研究ではワカサギのゾウミジンコに対する捕食の有無と選択性の評価を目的として,秋田県八郎湖においてワカサギの胃内容物および脂肪酸組成を調べた.藍藻が異常増殖する夏季に,ワカサギ胃内容物はゾウミジンコに85.4%を占められており,ゾウミジンコが主な餌源であることが分かった.特に,体長5cm以下のワカサギが選択的にゾウミジンコを捕食していた.また,夏季にワカサギとゾウミジンコに含まれる藍藻由来脂肪酸の含有率が増加しており,脂肪酸分析からもワカサギがゾウミジンコを捕食していることが示された.ワカサギを漁獲することでゾウミジンコへの捕食圧が低下し,その結果藍藻の抑制効果が高まると期待される.
