Parmi les nombreux sujets militaires figurant au Salon des Beaux-Arts sous le Second Empire, la guerre de Crimée est le thème le plus représenté en peinture entre 1857 et 1870 ; le conflit signe aussi la naissance du reportage de guerre photographique. L’attrait pour cette contrée lointaine stimule les artistes, nombreux à se rendre sur le terrain aux côtés des troupes.
