Many fundamental parameters of biological systems -- eg. productivity, population sizes and biomass -- are most effectively expressed in absolute terms. In contrast to proportional data (eg. percentages), absolute values provide standardised metrics on the functioning of biological entities (eg. organisism, species, ecosystems).
