O substrato deve ter a capacidade de fornecer o suporte que as raízes necessitam para se desenvolver e sustentar as mudas, além de fornecer nutrientes. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar o efeito do composto orgânico de lixo urbano (CO) no crescimento inicial das mudas de erva-mate. O delineamento utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso com três repetições e três tratamentos, sendo: (T1) 100% de CO, (T2) 100% de solo argiloso e (T3) 50% de CO e 50% de solo argiloso (1:1, v/v). As mudas foram mantidas sob tela de sombreamento, com irrigação automatizada. A utilização de CO na concentração de 100% proporcionou maior incremento em altura (16,29 cm) e diâmetro (4,25 mm), aos 150 dias após o transplante das mudas. O T1 foi considerado o melhor substrato para o desenvolvimento e crescimento inicial da erva-mate.
