The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Grazing Land National Resources Inventory (NRI) is the largest field-based survey in the world. The USDA NRCS has been conducting on-site inventories for over 65 years to assess the nation's natural resources on nonfederal (i.e., private, state, and tribal) lands. The current rangeland NRI on-site methodology on rangelands was official in 2004, whereas pasturelands began in 2013. The data collection design is based on a stratified area sample of 49 conterminous US states. The objectives of the NRI on nonfederal land are multifaceted and include national, state, major land resource areas, and Omernick ecoregion level scales; and supporting scientific research to improve understanding of rangeland and pastureland ecological dynamics.
