Islands represent natural laboratories for understanding the processes that shape biodiversity. While classical island biogeography theory has largely focused on area and isolation, the thermal environment and its latitudinal variation are increasingly recognized as crucial determinants of species distributions and community assembly. This paper explores how latitudinal gradients in temperature and climate variability influence species assembly rules on islands. We hypothesize that thermal filtering and niche conservatism play a more pronounced role in shaping insular communities at extreme latitudes (equatorial and polar), while dispersal limitation and competitive interactions might be relatively more important at mid-latitudes where thermal regimes are more benign or less extreme. By examining how species' thermal tolerances interact with island-specific climatic conditions across a latitudinal gradient, we aim to uncover the mechanisms driving species presence, absence, and relative abundance. We propose a conceptual framework integrating thermal niche theory, island biogeography, and community ecology to predict patterns of species sorting and diversification across different island systems. Understanding these thermal biogeographic patterns is critical for forecasting how island biodiversity will respond to ongoing climate change and for implementing effective conservation strategies.
