JBJS Open Access: 5-Year Update Article Swipe

JBJS Open Access was launched in 2016. Our goal was to publish an open-access orthopaedic journal that would provide readers throughout the world with the most current updates in their areas of interest1. From the outset, JBJS Open Access has had a dedicated Board of Associate Editors, who were carefully selected on the basis of their expertise, the quality of their contributions as reviewers, the breadth of their subspecialty interests, and their geographic locations, representing several continents. The Associate Editors utilize a well-established roster of expert JBJS consultant reviewers to ensure the quality of manuscripts. JBJS Open Access is dedicated to communicating the best evidence and most advanced data on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disease worldwide, reflecting an international perspective. Our journal has had the full support of the Board of Trustees of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Inc., which is dedicated to producing a family of high-quality print and online publications related to the field of orthopaedics. Through the use of an online, continuous-publication model, JBJS Open Access publishes timely and relevant evidence-based manuscripts with the potential to positively impact musculoskeletal patient care around the world. We are pleased with the growth of the journal in its first 5 years. In 2018, we provided an interim update on JBJS Open Access2. At that time, 162 manuscripts had been submitted for review and 51 manuscripts had been published. We noted that interest in the journal was strong, with approximately 50,000 visits and 100,000 page views since its inception. Visits now exceed 189,000, with approximately 309,700 page views since inception. In September 2018, JBJS Open Access became indexed and went live in PubMed Central. Subsequently, JBJS Open Access was indexed in SCOPUS. We also began to receive more unsolicited submissions in 2018, with author interest continuously increasing. In 2020, through a partnership of the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and JBJS, the AOA Critical Issues in Education channel was introduced in JBJS Open Access3, with Shepard Hurwitz, MD, FACHE, and Michelle James, MD, serving as Deputy Editor and Associate Deputy Editor, respectively. As the Topics in Training article type has been discontinued for the flagship journal, this is now the main forum for submissions focusing on education and training. The number of manuscripts submitted to JBJS Open Access increased from 84 in 2017 to 186 in 2020. A total of 55 scientific manuscripts and 15 AOA Critical Issues in Education articles were published in JBJS Open Access in 2020. Of note, from 2018 to 2020, more than one-half of the scientific manuscripts published originated from outside the United States. The number of JBJS submissions for which authors accepted transfer offers to JBJS Open Access increased from 43 in 2018 to 102 in 2020. The number of unsolicited submissions to JBJS Open Access totaled 78 in 2020. The JBJS Open Access editorial review process remains independent of that for JBJS, ensuring that each transferred or submitted manuscript receives a rigorous, autonomous assessment. As we move forward, we seek to establish metrics to further monitor and track the electronic usage of JBJS Open Access and to firmly establish it as a critically important component of the JBJS family of journals, dedicated to providing relevant information to enable and enhance the provision of quality orthopaedic care by musculoskeletal practitioners around the world. We are grateful for the interest in, and support of, JBJS Open Access in its initial 5 years, and we look forward to its continued progress in meeting the needs of our readership worldwide.
