Language is a system for communicating with other people using sounds, symbols, and words to express a meaning, idea, or thought. This chapter starts with the question of whether language is “biologically special”. This issue refers to the extent to which the human infant's brain is predisposed to learn about language. The chapter outlines two cognitive neuroscience approaches to this question. The first of these has been to investigate whether there are particular parts of the cortex critical for language processing or acquisition. The second cognitive neuroscience approach has been to attempt to identify neural correlates of language-related processing abilities very early in life. Studies of infants' processing of speech sounds have demonstrated not only that infants can discriminate these sounds early in life, but that the type of language they hear in their environment subsequently shapes how infants perceive speech sounds.
