Objectives Addressing sexual health concerns in female patients is paramount. Normalizing discussions around female sexuality creates a safe space for patients to voice their concerns and seek support. That’s why we wanted to investigate barriers and facilitators when discussing female sexuality. Methods This is a mixed-methods study in which opinions and experiences of healthcare professionals at a rehabilitation center for SCI/D were collected. In a first step, using a self-developed questionnaire, we asked them about 1) their opinion regarding sexuality in the context of disability, 2) their experience with the topic in their daily work routine, 3) their own involvement in sexual education following SCI/D during primary rehabilitation, and 4) their demographic characteristics. In a second step, we conducted focus groups to investigate barriers identified in the survey in more depth and to identify facilitators for sexual education of female patients after SCI/D. The questionnaire data were analyzed anonymously and evaluated using descriptive statistics, the focus groups were analyzed using narrative synthesis. Results 94 questionnaires were completed by 66 (70.2%) women and 27 (28.7%) men. The respondents had an average age of 35.2 ± 12.8 years, and 42.6% were nurses, 34.0% were therapists, and 17.0% were physicians. Accordingly, the focus groups consisted of these professional groups. Among all respondents, 46.8% had been contacted by female patients regarding sexuality, mainly therapists (45.5%) or nurses (29.5%). But only 36.2% brought up sexuality related topics with female patients by themselves. One-third (35.1%) did not feel competent enough to discuss the topic sexuality with patients. The major facilitators identified were additional training for HCP and sharing responsibility among the multidisciplinary team. Conclusions The surveyed healthcare professionals agree that sexuality should be addressed during primary rehabilitation. However, we identified several barriers that often make it difficult to talk about this sensitive topic. Institutions could address this issue by promoting further training regarding sexuality in individuals with SCI/D for their HCP. Conflicts of Interest I have no conflicts of interest.
