This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project investigated MLD as a method for improving the electrochemical performance of batteries utilizing siliconbased anodes. A variety of chemical compositions and thicknesses of surface coatings were applied to Siparticles and evaluated in electrochemical cells. MLD was consistently shown to improve cell performance, including enhancement to discharge capacity and cycle life, with multiple different MLD encapsulation coatings types intended to improve material conductivity and chemical stability.
