Operando soft XAS allows assessing the mechanism of CO oxidation on high entropy spinels. It proceeds via CO reactive adsorption on surface Mn( iii ), reducing them to Mn( ii ). O 2 oxidizes CO, restoring Mn( iii ). The other transition metals are inactive.
