Chapter 8 covers microfiltration and starts by summarizing the development of membranes and applications over the last 100 years. There follows a characterization of membranes into screen and depth filters, including an explanation of effective pore diameter. The next sections cover the making of depth filters by the Loeb–Sourirajan technique or by multilayer casting, and the importance of the taper angle across the membrane. Detailed descriptions of the measurement of pore size and membrane integrity by means of bacterial challenge tests, latex challenge tests, and bubble point tests are given. Most commercial microfiltration membranes take the form of cartridges containing pleated flat sheet membranes, and these are described and illustrated. Process design considerations come next, and the chapter finishes with a discussion of microfiltration applications in the pharmaceutical, electronics, and beverage industries.
