This research explored the training needs for teaching scientific content in basic education teachers in the Mayan area of Mexico.The study was carried out in the state of Yucatan through documentary analysis and a questionnaire for self-evaluation of teaching practice in science teaching, which was administered in the form of a survey to 49 teachers teaching in communities like Ticul, Oxkutzcab, Tizimín, Dzan, Kanasín, Progreso and Mérida. The results of the investigation allow us to claim that there is a great presence of normal teachers in the Yucatan basic education system, who demand strategies to strengthen the professional and continuous training of these teachers in the area of science education, possibly through formal post-graduated courses. Finally, the design of an evaluation study with a larger sample of participants is recommended to identify the challenges, experiences, and critical issues that teachers experience in teaching science in Yucatan.
