Speaking is a crucial skill for learners in acquiring a new language, especially English. In fact, becoming proficient in spoken communication can be challenging for learners. This research aimed to identify the difficulties that students had to face in developing their English speaking skill. A descriptive survey was conducted using a quantitative research method to gather data from 50 second-year non-English major students (e.g. mechanical engineering students) at a university in Southern Vietnam. As well, questionnaires were employed to collect the data and IBM SPSS version 20 software was used for data analysis. The results revealed that the students coped with both linguistic and psychological obstacles when learning English speaking. The most significant challenges included vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and the ability to express ideas clearly, with emotional and social barriers for further complicating the learning process. Based on these findings, suggestions were made to help students somehowimprove their speaking skill.
