This study addresses the major challenge of short-term economic and environmental dispatch (EED) optimization in microgrids, ensuring safe power supply with cost minimization and environmental impact. The primary objective is to integrate an Improved Light Spectrum Optimizer (ILSO) into microgrid operation dynamics, taking into account variability in renewable energy, load demand, and economic-environmental considerations. The research contribution is based on its enhancement of the Light Spectrum Optimizer with Opposition-Based Learning and chaotic maps to overcome convergence challenges in complex optimization situations. Comparative analysis show that the proposed ILSO surpasses the other cutting-edge methods, including QPSO and conventional LSO by achieving a 5–10 % reduction in operating costs and consistently lower carbon emissions for 200 iterations. The proposed model guarantees the stability for the microgrid operation in fluctuations of renewable energy output by improving reliability and sustainability.
