P4‐199: PERSISTENT EFFECTS OF CONCUSSION ON ERPS IN FRENCH RUGBY PLAYERS Article Swipe

Mild traumatic brain injurie (mTBI) resulting from sport concussion is a major public health affecting around 3 million individuals annualy and more than 800000 children are treated for TBI every year. Even if the injury is generally transient, recent researchs has suggested the persistent effects of concussion leading to cognitive dysfuncion and dementia in athlets with previous injuries. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate young adults rugby players with and without a history of concussion using a standard clinical assessment and electrophysiological measures for detecting persistent changes in cognitive functionning. 24 young adults rugby players (25,4 ± 4,6 years; 16 with a history of more than one concussion in the last 3 years and 8 without mTBI) were evaluated using the SCAT and event related brain potentials (ERPs) recorded during a three-stimulus oddball task. No significant differences were found between groups on the SCAT. Significant decrease of amplitude of N2 and P3b and a trend of increased P3b latency were noted for those with history compare to those without history of concussions. These findings support a persistent effect of concussion in young rugby players on neuroelectric events in absence of cognitive decline and highlights the importance of individual player load management in reducing injury risk in training and playing environment
