ABSTRAK Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mempersiapkan adsorben berbahan baku kaolin alam yang dimodifikasi CTAB untuk menyisihkan ion logam Fe2+ dari permukaan air. Kaolin alam dicuci dengan air suling dan selanjutnya dikeringkan dalam oven dryer, Kaolin selanjutnya di aktivasi dengan HCL 1 N, dan di modifikasi dengan surfaktan CTAB dengan perbandungan 45% dari berat kaolin. Proses penyerapan dilakukan dengan mencampurkan 2 gram adsorben yang telah dimodifikasi pada 100 ml sampel air yang mengandung 3 ppm ion logam Fe2+ diikuti dengan pengadukan 100 rpm, pH 5, dan suhu 300C. Konsentrasi Fe2+ pada permukaan air dianalisa dengan menggunakan AAS setiap selang waktu tertentu dalam periode 20 – 100 menit. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan adsorben kaolin tanpa modifikasi mampu menurunkan konsentrasi Fe2+ sebesar 62,23% selama 40 menit, sedangkan adsorben dari kaolin modifikasi surfaktan pada awal proses mampu menurunkan konsentrasi Fe2+ mencapai 73,8% pada waktu 10 menit. Hasil karakterisasi SEM menunjukkan bahwa adsorben kaolin modifikasi mampu menyerap ion logam Fe2+ lebih banyak dalam waktu singkat karena mempunyai permukaan kontak yang luas dan juga mempunyai struktur permukaan acak, dibandingkan dengan adsorben kaolin yang tidak modifikasi surfaktan mempunyai struktur morfologinya yang beraturan.
