Plate tectonics is the fundamental framework for understanding Earth's dynamic surface processes, dictating the creation, consumption, and redistribution of lithosphere. While divergent (mid-ocean ridges) and convergent (subduction zones) plate boundaries are typically viewed as distinct and relatively stable features, the transition of a subduction zone into a spreading ridge, or vice versa, represents a profound tectonic metamorphosis with significant implications for global geodynamics and surface evolution. This paper explores the mechanisms and consequences of such subduction-to-ridge transitions, examining how these events contribute to the Wilsonian remapping of Earth's surface. We review the geological and geophysical evidence for ridge subduction, slab window formation, and the subsequent initiation of new spreading centers or the demise of existing ones. Key case studies, such as the evolution of the Pacific Ring of Fire and the tectonic history of various triple junctions, are analyzed to illustrate the complex interplay of plate kinematics, mantle dynamics, and crustal deformation during these transformative events. We propose that these transitions are not merely localized phenomena but are integral to the larger supercontinent cycle, driving major shifts in plate configurations, magmatism, and orogenesis. Understanding the drivers and signatures of subduction-to-ridge metamorphosis is crucial for refining paleogeographic reconstructions, deciphering the long-term evolution of Earth's mantle convection, and predicting future geological activity.
