PROCEDURE FOR INTRODUCING TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION INTO SEISMIC DESIGN OF BRIDGES AND VIADUCTS Article Swipe
In recent years, there has been vigorous development of technology for structural design using topology optimization. Topology optimization is a geometry search method that progressively eliminates portions of structures that contribute little to performance. It is known that topology optimization can reduce costs while maintaining overall performance, and that it can search for geometry with a high degree of freedom without limiting geometry of structures in advance. In Japan, the practical application of this method has been progressing mainly in the mechanical field, but its application in the civil engineering field is limited, and there are no examples of its use in the seismic design of bridges and viaducts as far as we know. This is partly due to the lack of practical techniques for applying topology optimization to seismic design. Therefore, a basic process for introducing topology optimization into seismic design of bridges and viaducts was proposed. In the proposed method, seismic design of structures is first carried out based on the current general method. Then, several candidates of structural shapes are created by topology optimization, and range of pareto-optimal solutions is narrowed down in terms of cost and performance. Finally, designers select the optimal structural shapes from the narrowed range of the solutions based on budget, constructability, and maintainability. In order to confirm the effectiveness of the method, the proposed method was applied to the concrete pier with the column height of 6m. As a result, it was confirmed that the several structural shapes could be obtained as the pareto-optimal solutions, and that the structural shapes selected from the range of the solutions had advantages in terms of performance and cost compared with the conventional one.
