Adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently experience difficulties with emotion regulation, which can contribute to the development of outcomes such as anxiety and depression. However, there remains a lack of accessible interventions targeting emotion regulation that have been proven to be effective for this population. Given the potential for digital health interventions (DHI) to meet this need, we here describe the prototyping phase of the development of a novel smartphone-based DHI targeting emotion regulation, specifically tailored for adolescents with ADHD. The DHI was developed drawing on intervention-mapping, behavioral intervention technology (BIT) and user-centred design principles. Its therapeutic content was informed by a review of the evidence, clinician input, and consultations with adolescents with ADHD. The current paper describes the motivation for, development process, and content of the prototype and sets out the framework that will be used for its further development and evaluation.
