The sustainable development of the wind energy industry faces several challenges, one of which is the lack of flexibility in adapting to increasing power system complexity. From the wind farm operator’s perspective, flexibility means the ability to adjust energy generation patterns to different constraints. However, in current industry practice, curtailment strategies are primarily driven by regulatory restrictions and market-based economic factors. The effects of these strategies on turbine loading, lifetime, and their associated costs or benefits are mostly overlooked. Currently, operators lack tools to evaluate curtailment strategies while also considering their potentially conflicting effects on turbine component lifespan. In this sense, a condition monitoring system (CMS) based on an advanced shape sensing solution for wind turbine blades is being developed by Fibersail. This work demonstrates the capability of Fibersail’s CMS to deliver critical data to assess the impact of curtailment strategies on turbine blades in terms of fatigue loads and deflection. By continuously tracking blade shape and loads throughout turbine’s lifetime, operators can make more informed operational decisions. This enables a transition to active asset management, where operators can strategically choose between “Power Mode” - maximizing energy production or “Lifetime Mode” - minimizing component wear and extending turbine lifespan.
