O reconhecimento legal da Língua Brasileira de Sinais (Libras) nos níveis municipal, estadual e federal representa um marco significativo nas políticas linguísticas brasileiras, resultante da luta histórica das comunidades surdas pela garantia de seus direitos linguísticos e sociais. Este artigo analisa a Libras como a língua natural dos surdos (Lillo-Martin, 1999; Capovilla; Souza, 2000; Quadros; Karnopp, 2004) problematizando os equívocos conceituais amplamente disseminados na sociedade, que frequentemente a reduzem a simples gestos, mímicas ou formas de comunicação limitada, que refletem equívocos sobre o status linguístico da Libras. A pesquisa fundamentada em uma revisão bibliográfica e documental, examina a lei do Estado do Paraná e seus municípios e investiga a utilização de termos como "Linguagem Gestual" e "Linguagem de Sinais", questionando os impactos dessas nomenclaturas na consolidação do seu status linguístico. O objetivo é interpretar essas legislações à luz das políticas linguísticas e dos Estudos Linguísticos de Libras, considerando o contexto histórico de sua elaboração. Como objetivo específico, busca-se identificar os termos utilizados nos textos legais e discutir suas implicações para a visibilidade da Libras como língua plena e estruturada. A análise identificou a prevalência de terminologias inadequadas e demonstrou a importância de consolidar o termo “Língua Brasileira de Sinais” para reforçar o reconhecimento da Libras como língua legítima e natural dos surdos com estrutura própria. Conclui-se que, há necessidade de uniformizar a terminologia legal, com vistas a fortalecer a conscientização pública sobre o status da Libras.
