Objective: To analyze the relationship between diabetes mellitus and acute myocardial infarction, based on risk factors, hospital admissions, and deaths. Method: Research developed from a systematic integrative review and an ecological and retrospective study, with data collected from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). The integrative review included complete studies in Portuguese, published between 2014 and 2023, and excluded animal studies and literature reviews. Results: The study showed that diabetic patients are more likely to have heart muscle damage, especially when associated with factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and a sedentary lifestyle. Chest pain was found to be the main symptom of coronary artery disease in these patients, with a higher frequency of heart attacks and post-heart attack complications. DATASUS data indicated high numbers of hospitalizations for acute myocardial infarction and diabetes mellitus in Brazil, with increasing prevalence in 2022. A progressive increase in deaths was also observed, peaking in 2021. Conclusion: there is a correlation between diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular complications, such as myocardial restenosis, heart failure, and coronary artery disease. The findings reinforce the need for integrated care involving strict glycemic control, prevention, and treatment of cardiovascular complications, highlighting the importance of continuous education and follow-up to improve the prognosis of these patients.
