This paper challenges the conventional, Eurocentric understanding of Modernism by proposing a polycentric framework that acknowledges and explores its diverse geographical manifestations and aesthetic innovations across the globe. Traditionally confined to Western European and North American contexts, Modernism's rich tapestry of experimental forms, thematic preoccupations, and philosophical underpinnings extended far beyond these established centers, often developing in parallel or in direct dialogue with local sociopolitical conditions and cultural traditions. By remapping Modernism, we aim to uncover how distinct geographies fostered unique aesthetic responses to modernity, leading to a plurality of modernisms rather than a singular, monolithic movement. This study investigates the interconnections and divergences among these multiple centers of innovation, examining how local specificities shaped a global literary phenomenon. Through an analysis of selected literary texts from various non-Western contexts, we demonstrate how these polycentric aesthetics not only expanded the formal repertoire of Modernism but also offered critical perspectives on its foundational narratives of progress, tradition, and identity. The paper argues for a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of Modernism, one that embraces its global reach and acknowledges the significant contributions of often marginalized literary traditions to its overall character and legacy.
