"Desde que el concepto de ecosistema fue propuesto como una de las unidades básicas de la naturaleza, su uso no se ha restringido a espacios académicos, científicos o de tomadores de decisiones en el sector ambiental, sino que ha logrado permear la sociedad y el público en general, convirtiéndose en un referente de comunicación entre diferentes sectores de la sociedad, y es hoy una palabra ampliamente utilizada en contextos donde es relevante entender cómo funcionan los seres vivos y las relaciones con su entorno. En el ámbito académico-científico ha sido propuesto como concepto de organización, marco y teoría central en la ecología. En la toma de decisiones, el concepto se ha tratado de llevar hacia un terreno práctico de manejo y planificación de los recursos. En este orden de ideas, el término ha sido utilizado para referirse a unidades espacialmente distinguibles que representan entidades, las cuales por lo general son tenidas en cuenta para las actividades de zonificación y gestión del territorio o para la obtención, manejo y protección de recursos y servicios ambientales. Más allá incluso, el ecosistema ha pasado a formar parte del lenguaje común para referirse a sitios naturales específicos importantes para la sociedad. El número de connotaciones utilizadas hoy en día es tan amplio que ha ocasionado un uso inconsistente o aplicaciones confusas del término. Este trabajo presenta una revisión del concepto y el uso del término de ecosistema a través de la recopilación de literatura y el análisis de su evolución a lo largo de los últimos 80 años."
