In the first issue of the Optical Communications and Networks Series in 2023, we have selected six fascinating articles reporting on recent advances in optical communications and networking. They address free-space optical (FSO) communications including visible light communication (VLC), intelligent fiber-optic communications leveraging machine learning (ML), passive optical network (PON) technology for industrial networks, and dynamic optical path provisioning for alien access links.
