We have elucidated the molecular mechanism by which the photosensitizing protein miniSOG, initially a poor singlet oxygen generator, becomes an efficient singlet oxygen generator after prolonged blue-light irradiation and is a useful tool in correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) experiments.
