Space systems are fundamental components of critical infrastructure, and their loss would profoundly affect a large population, increasingly with safety consequences. Additionally, today's digitally connected space infrastructure, like other interconnected cyber systems such as banking, is exposed to sophisticated and devastating cyberattacks. Such attacks are mainly divided into electronic and cyber. This chapter lays out the research on current space technologies, attack surfaces, and legal frameworks for their protection and governance. This chapter is an extension of existing academic work, introducing a case for business, legal, and engineering frameworks to be developed specifically to ensure space systems are cyber-resilient to current and future threats.
