The Tehuacán Valley in south-central Mexico stands as an archeological cradle for maize domestication, providing unparalleled insights into one of humanity's most significant agricultural transformations. This paper explores the genomic evidence underlying the domestication of maize (Zea mays ssp. mays) from its wild progenitor, teosinte (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis), specifically focusing on the pivotal role of the Tehuacán Valley. By integrating archaeological records with modern genomic analyses, we delineate the genetic blueprint of key domestication traits, such as increased cob size, kernel retention, and changes in plant architecture, that emerged over millennia. We hypothesize that ancient DNA studies from archaeobotanical remains found in sites like Coxcatlan Cave, coupled with comprehensive genomic sequencing of extant landraces and teosinte populations, will illuminate the temporal and spatial dynamics of genetic selection. The Tehuacán Valley's unique environmental and cultural context likely facilitated specific selection pressures that shaped the maize genome. This genomic perspective not only reconstructs the evolutionary trajectory of maize but also identifies candidate genes and regulatory networks critical for domestication, offering valuable resources for future crop improvement strategies.
