Spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing \n(SEFDM) is a multi-carrier signal waveform, which achieves \nhigher spectral efficiency, relative to conventional orthogonal \nfrequency division multiplexing (OFDM), by violating the orthogonality \nof its sub-carriers. This survey provides the history \nof SEFDM development since its inception in 2003, covering \nfundamentals and concepts, wireless and optical communications \napplications, circuit design and experimental testbeds. We focus \non work done at UCL and outline work done other universities \nand research laboratories worldwide. We outline techniques to \nimprove the performance of SEFDM and its practical utility with \nfocus on signal generation, detection and channel estimation.
