This chapter outlines the basic article publishing process and discusses several closely related issues - such as choosing a journal, how to judge whether a paper is ready to submit, sustaining publication over time, and co-authorship. The emphasis in this chapter is on the research article, which is the most common type of manuscript scholars in political science and international relations submit to academic journals. In this chapter we introduce concepts such as "peer review," how to suggest reviewers, what is a good abstract, selecting co-authors and generally how to prepare a manuscript for submission. We provide basic advice as to how to prepare a manuscript for submission, that increases the likelihood that it will be reviewed by a journal.
