This paper gives an overview of the transverse dynamics in particle acceler- ators with – following the emphasis of the school – special focus (hic) on transfer lines and application for beam injection and extraction. We will re- strict ourselves to a bare an introduction to the basic concepts that are needed to understand the boundary conditions to be met when we are trying to transfer a beam of charged particles from one accelerator to the next.
