Unlocking Slab Dynamics: A Global Synthesis of Subduction Geometry, Mantle Flow, and Back-Arc Deformation Article Swipe

This study presents a global synthesis of subduction zone dynamics, focusing on the intricate relationships between slab geometry, mantle flow patterns, and back-arc deformation. By integrating seismic tomography, geodynamic modeling, and structural geology observations from various subduction zones worldwide, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the forces driving plate tectonics and their surface manifestations. We investigate the influence of slab dip angle, trench migration, and mantle viscosity on the development of back-arc basins and the overall deformation of the overriding plate. Our findings reveal complex interactions between these factors, highlighting the importance of considering regional variations in lithospheric and asthenospheric properties to accurately predict subduction zone behavior. The research provides a framework for understanding the evolution of continental margins and the generation of arc volcanism and seismicity associated with subduction processes.
