La reciente tecnología de las vacunas de ADN representa un paso potencialmente revolucionario en el desarrollo de la vacunación. Su mayor ventaja es su capacidad de generar respuesta inmune celular y humoral, eliminando muchos de los problemas asociados con las vacunas tradicionales. La vacunación con ADN consiste en la introducción directa de ADN plasmídico desnudo en la célula, de manera que se puede lograr la expresión de una proteína antigénica dentro de la célula transfectada. Desde que fueron producidas por primera vez, cientos de publicaciones han reportado la eficacia de las vacunas de ADN en modelos animales contra enfermedades infecciosas, contra cáncer y contra enfermedades autoinmunes, y se han iniciado los primeros estudios clínicos en humanos.
