Genomic regions conferring partial Fusarium crown rot resistance in commercial wheat cultivars
2025-03-01 • Anke Martin, Sandra C. Lamprecht, Cassandra Percy, M. Booyse, Elsabet Wessels, Driecus Lesch, R. Prins
Abstract This study aimed to genetically characterize Fusarium crown rot (FCR) resistance in high‐yielding commercial spring bread wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars SST 087, with partial FCR resistance, and susceptible cultivar PAN 3471. Multi‐year trials were conducted in South Africa, and one trial was run in Australia. Nine FCR quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were identified across eight different chromosomes (1A, 1D, 2A, 2B, 3D, 5B, 6D, 7A, and 7D). A QTL on chromosome 7A had the highest logarithm of the …

Diversity and pathogenicity of Fusarium spp. isolated from cultivated sorghum stems and roots in eastern Australia
2024-08-17 • Niroshini Gunasinghe, Niloofar Vaghefi, Roger G. Shivas, Yu Pei Tan, David Jordan, Emma Mace, Anke Martin
Abstract Stalk and root rots of cultivated sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor ) are caused by several Fusarium species worldwide. This study evaluated Fusarium diversity, pathogenicity and population structure amongst 212 isolates obtained from 169 sorghum plants from commercial field crops in eastern Australia. Sequences of translation elongation factor‐1α ( tef‐1α ), RNA polymerase II largest subunit ( rpb1 ), RNA polymerase II second largest subunit ( rpb2 ) and calmodulin ( cmdA ) were used to construct multilocus phyl…

Virulence Spectra of Hungarian Pyrenophora teres f. teres Isolates Collected from Experimental Fields Show Continuous Variation without Specific Isolate × Barley Differential Interactions
2024-02-28 • J. Bakonyi, Diána Seress, Zoltán Á. Nagy, Ildikó Csorba, Mónika Cséplö, Tibor Marton, Anke Martin, Klára Mészáros
Pyrenophora teres f. teres (Ptt), the causal agent of net form net blotch (NFNB) disease, is an important and widespread pathogen of barley. This study aimed to quantify and characterize the virulence of Ptt isolates collected from experimental fields of barley in Hungary. Infection responses across 20 barley differentials were obtained from seedling assays of 34 Ptt isolates collected from three Hungarian breeding stations between 2008 and 2018. Twenty-eight Ptt pathotypes were identified. Correspondence analysis…

Multi-parental fungal mapping population study to detect genomic regions associated with Pyrenophora teres f. teres virulence
2023-06-16 • Buddhika A. Dahanayaka, Anke Martin
Abstract In recent years multi-parental mapping populations (MPPs) have been widely adopted in many crops to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) as this method can compensate for the limitations of QTL analyses using bi-parental mapping populations. Here we report the first multi-parental nested association mapping (MP-NAM) population study used to detect genomic regions associated with host-pathogenic interactions. MP-NAM QTL analyses were conducted on 399 Pyrenophora teres f. teres individuals using biallelic,…

First report of Fusarium madaense as a cause of root and stalk rot on Sorghum bicolor in Australia
2023-04-01 • Niroshini Gunasinghe, Niloofar Vaghefi, Roger G. Shivas, Yu Pei Tan, David Jordan, Emma Mace, Alan Cruickshank, Anke Martin
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is mainly grown for stock feed in eastern Australia where significant economic losses result from diseases caused by Fusarium spp. (Petrovic et al., 2009; Kelly et al., 2017). During the 2018 sorghum growing season, 66 plants showing symptoms typical of Fusarium infection were randomly collected from three sorghum fields in Barramornie (27.08○N, 150.11°E), southern Queensland. Fusarium isolates were obtained from surface-sterilised sorghum stem or root pieces (1 cm) placed on Fusarium-sel…
